Fatal Breakthrough COVID-19 after Bivalent Booster Dose
70-year-old female with pre-existing conditions (systolic heart failure, A-fib, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, renal disease, ischemic cardiomyopathy, proteinuria, secondary hyperparathyroidism of renal origin, with defibrillator and on warfarin) received her 5th dose of Moderna vaccine (updated bivalent booster) in September 2022. Two months later she tested positive for COVID-19, was admitted to the hospital and died on the 8th day after symptom onset, despite treatment.
76-year-old male with a history of diabetes and coronary artery disease received five doses of the Pfizer vaccine (Dose 1 in January 2021, Dose 2 in February 2021, Dose 3 in October 2021, Dose 4 in April 2022 and Dose 5 (bivalent) on 10/26/22). On 11/2/22, seven (7) days after receiving the Pfizer bivalent booster, patient tested positive for COVID via PCR after being admitted to hospital for unspecified reasons. The patient died on 11/3/22 (8 days after booster) and the cause of death is listed as multiorgan failure (primary), cardiogenic shock (secondary), acute myocardial infarction (secondary), and coronary artery disease (secondary).
87-year-old male had received all 5 doses of Moderna COVID vaccine (primary series, 2 regular boosters, and bivalent booster) & presented to the Emergency Department from his outpatient clinic visit 1.5 months after his last dose for workup of hypotension. He also had a cough, & tested positive for COVID, but that was not his chief complaint nor the reason of why he was admitted. He passed away from Pulseless Electrical Activity (PEA) arrest 6 days later.
71-year-old male with preexisting conditions (lung cancer and kidney failure) was vaccinated 5 times with the Pfizer BNT162b2 vaccine, having received it in February and August 2021, March 2022 and, the 5th dose, in August 2022. He was hospitalized one month later for multiple reasons, including small bowel perforation, shock, hypoxic respiratory failure, multiple metastasized adenocarcinoma of the lung, acute renal failure, and a-Fib. He was transferred to a hospice facility where he tested negative for COVID-19 on 09/15/2022 but then positive on 09/25/2022 and 09/26/2022. He died on 10/04/2022.
75-year-old female with preexisting conditions (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuritis, Hypertension, Neurogenic Bladder, Hyperlipidemia, Osteoarthritis, Carcinoma of the Breast) received 5 doses of Moderna vaccine. She tested positive for COVID-19 5 month after the 5th dose and died 18 days after her positive test.
